Coming Up: A Second Yamuna Expressway to Handle Noida, Greater Noida Traffic Woes

Noida, April 1, 2025: The Noida Authority has given an in-principle approval to another expressway between Noida and Greater Noida. The decision came at a Noida board meeting on March 28 where the requirement and design of the proposed expressway was deliberated on. A second expressway in the region has become vital given the growth in population density as well as the upcoming Noida airport project.

As of now, two options are likely–an 8-lane surface road or a 6-lane elevated road along the Yamuna embankments between Okhla Barrage and the existing Yamuna Expressway. Another possibility is to bypass the 25-km Noida Expressway.

The Noida authority is looking to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to build the new expressway as a national highway. Chief secretary and Noida board chairperson Manoj Kumar Singh has been reported to have said that Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway authorities should build the road themselves if the NHAI option does not work out. That could mean the creation of a special purpose vehicle (SPV) by the three authorities.

Noida Expressway now sees a lot of traffic that is growing in pace with residential and commercial development in the area. It is well on the way to becoming like the always-choked Gurugram-Delhi stretch of NH8. The upcoming airport and population growth in the area point to just that outcome.

The proposed expressway will stretch from Okhla barrage to the Yamuna Expressway via the Hindon-Yamuna doab. This alignment will thus incorporate existing infrastructure along the Yamuna marginal bund, now overseen by the state’s irrigation department.

The 4-lane road between Okhla barrage and the irrigation drain is 11 km in length. It runs parallel to major sectors, including 94, 124, 125, 126, 127, 128, 129, 130, 131, 132, 133, 134, and 135. Then, the 14-km Hindon-Yamuna doab bund road runs parallel to sectors like 150, 160, 162, 164, 165 and 167.

It has been reported that Sector 168 has been identified as a crucial point for an interchange with Faridabad-Noida-Ghaziabad (FNG) expressway. Similarly, at Sector 150, the new expressway will be linked to the main road between Sector 149A and Sector 150.
