Esri India announces a slew of steps to drive GIS growth
Esri India, the Geographic Information System software and solutions provider, announced several new initiatives at the 16th Esri India User Conference (UC) held in New Delhi from December 2 to 4. The initiatives include setting up a ‘Centre of Excellence’ to create new GIS applications and launch of ‘Start Up’ programme for providing emerging businesses the tools to build mapping and location analytics capabilities into their products.
According to a press release the company also recognized the winners of “mApp Your Way”, a GIS app development contest organized by Esri India for university-level students which offered an opportunity to them to use GIS and build socially relevant Apps. Five finalists selected from IIT Mumbai; Anna University, Chennai; Central University Karnataka and the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun (two teams) presented their apps at the event. The winner for the challenge was IIT Mumbai for its crowd-sourced route navigation and pothole monitoring application.
Jack Dangermond, Founder and President, Esri Inc., delivering a keynote address at the UC stated, “There is immense potential in GIS and its applications for driving the next phase of growth in India. There are several citizen-centric programs running in the country which are using GIS Technology.”
Commenting on the event, Agendra Kumar, President, Esri India said, “It is important to showcase GIS as technology and enable people to understand our offerings in software, services and skill-building. With this year’s UC we aim at taking the use of GIS technology to a much higher level to aid India to become a digitally enabled and future-ready nation.”
The event was attended by more than 1,200 delegates and had over 80 sessions featuring 100 speakers.

GIS will be used extensively in key Government programs like Digital India, AMRUT, Smart Cities, Swachh Bharat and Clean Ganga and Esri India is looking to play a pivotal role in these programs by offering state-of-the-art GIS solutions. The Company is also supporting capacity-building initiative through GIS training facilities across five centres in the country.
