New Delhi:Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated SAIL’s Steel Processing Unit (SPU), Kandrori, today at a function held in Bilaspur. This Steel Processing Unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) shall produce TMT bars. The unit will also be able to produce Earth Quake Resistant and other grades of TMT bars. Governor of Himachal Pradesh Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Shri Virbhadra Singh, Union Minister of Steel, Chaudhary Birender Singh, Minister of State for Steel, Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, Lok Sabha MP Shri Shanta Kumar and Himachal Pradesh MLA Shri Manohar Dhiman graced the occasion. Additional Secretary & Financial Advisor, MoS, Shri Saraswati Prasad, Chairman, SAIL, Shri P.K. Singh and other senior political leaders were also present at the function.
Under the plan to increase steel consumption across country, especially in semi urban and rural areas, SAIL had decided to set up SPUs in various states where integrated steel plants were not there. In line with this vision and to promote steel usage in Northern states, an SPU has been set up in Kandrori, Himachal Pradesh involving an investment of around Rs। 70 Crore. This SPU envisaged installation of TMT Bar Mill of capacity 1 lakh tonne per year to produce TMT bars in following sizes and specifications – Size (Dia): 8, 10, 12, 16, 20 & 25 mm and in FE-500 grade as per IS 1786:2008. The input billets for producing the TMT shall be sourced internally from SAIL. The hot trials at the TMT Bar Mill commenced in June this year and around 1200 tonnes have already been rolled under the commissioning test period. SAIL is aware of the specific requirements of this hilly area and also has a marketing plan to match the demand. The TMT bars would be of world class quality and shall cater to the demand, both local as well as from adjoining regions.
