The war against global warming has indirectly given a major push to adoption of electric vehicles worldwide. India, one of the signatories to the Paris Agreement, has also taken several steps to phase out fossil fuel-based vehicles and replace them with EVs. The FAME scheme is particularly intended to achieve that objective. With EVs gaining increased acceptance globally, the fight against global warming is heading towards a near-victory.
Contributing more than a quarter to greenhouse gases emission, commuting is one of the major polluting activities all over the world. At the beginning of the 21st century, temperature increase had reached critical levels due to global warming. Many parts of the world started facing the adverse effects of global warming, like droughts, water shortages, forest fires, pest invasions and intense storms.
To fight against climate change and global warming, a declaration, called The Paris Agreement, was signed by 196 countries on December 12, 2015. The goal of the agreement is to keep the global temperature below 2 degrees Celsius. To achieve this, all the signatory countries agreed to opt for greener alternatives, in which phasing out fossil fuel-based vehicles and replacing them with electric vehicles was also decided.
- Many parts of the world started facing the adverse effects of global warming, like droughts, water shortages, forest fires, pest invasions and intense storms.
- As a sequel to the Paris Agreement, the Government launched the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) Scheme in 2015, the second phase of which began in 2019. Initially, EV was a niche product and only a few opted for it. These vehicles were more expensive and weren’t preferred due to range anxiety and lack of feasible options.
- With multiple governments continuing to offer holistic benefits for EV purchase, it is estimated that the sales of this cleaner mode of transport would see a phenomenal rise in the coming years.
As a sequel to the Paris Agreement, the Government of India launched the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) Scheme in 2015, the second phase of which commenced in 2019. The objective of the FAME Scheme is to educate the people about the benefits of EVs and push the sales of these greener vehicles in the country. The Government aims to phase out at least 30 per cent of the fossil fuel-based vehicles in the country and replace them with EVs by the year 2030.
The sales of EVs across the globe skyrocketed in the year 2019 as subsidies and tax benefits were offered by various governments to push their sales. Companies like Tesla and Polestar (Volkswagen) were the main beneficiaries of this paradigm shift. Initially, EV was a niche product and only a few opted for it. These vehicles were more expensive and weren’t preferred due to range anxiety and lack of feasible options. But with growing technology and focus on infrastructure development, people have started to migrate towards buying EVs.
Global warming, in a way, has pushed the sales of EVs all across the globe. With multiple governments continuing to offer holistic benefits for EV purchase, it is estimated that the sales of this cleaner mode of transport would see a phenomenal rise in the coming years. Once that happens, mankind would be a victor in major part of the war on global warming.
