IIIT Hyderabad is hosting a 5-day course on “Earthquake Resistant Design of Buildings”
EERC is organizing the course and a one – day workshop aiming at contributing to the society from academic point of view
19th September, 2016, Hyderabad: The Earthquake Engineering Research Centre (EERC) an establishment of IIIT Hyderabad is organizing a 5-day course on Earthquake Resistant Design of Buildings at the campus. The course will begin on 19th September, 2016 and will conclude on 23rd September, 2016, followed by a one-day workshop on ‘Earthquake Resistant Design of Structures’. The 5-day course will focus specifically on the undergraduate students of Civil Engineering. The course will be conducted by distinguished faculty from the institute like Swajit Singh Goud, Aniket N Bhalkikar, PVS Neelima, Pulkit D. Velani, E. Keerthana. The course will be coordinated by Ramancharla Pradeep Kumar, IIIT Hyderabad.
The key objective of this course is to educate building professionals and address the safety related issues that needs attention while planning, designing and construction of the buildings. According to the Indian Seismic Code IS:1893, 60% of the countries land area is under threat and due to the lack of knowledge regarding the designing of the construction, the buildings are prone to collapse which eventually leads to loss of life. The lack of knowledge on earthquake-resistant design and construction practices led to considerable damages when exposed to the earthquakes that occurred over the last 23 years. The professionals involved in building construction need to make more efforts towards safety of buildings during possible future earthquake, and eventually eliminate loss of life due to building collapses.
Speaking about the course and the workshop, Prof. Ramancharla Pradeep Kumar, IIIT Hyderabad said, “there is a need for keeping abreast with latest developments in analysis and design of building. This workshop & course will help professional in that direction”. The workshop on the last day after the completion of the course, will be a discussion based session on the changes that have been made on the Indian Seismic Code IS:1893 with the analysis and the design principles for the construction of buildings. The workshop will have experts like Prof. Srinagesh (NGRI, Hyderabad), Prof. Rupen Goswami (IIT Madras), Prof. Supriya Mohanty, and Prof. Pradeep Kumar, talking about various topics related to earthquake resistant design & construction.
