From everyday communication through varied devices to hospitals and defence, radio frequency technology is used in almost all spheres of life. An easy-to-install and inexpensive technology, RF also has a few disadvantages. But these negatives can be reduced by the use of devices based on advanced technologies like IoT and AI.
Radio Frequency technology refers to wireless electromagnetic signals used as form of communication. People use this technology to communicate through mobile, computers and for television broadcasting. RF propagation occurs at the speed of light and does not need a medium, like air, in order to travel. Wi-Fi at homes also uses RF communication to connect two devices or computers.
RF network has multiple advantages. It can penetrate through walls of buildings and houses making it an ideal choice for mobile and television communications. Also having huge applications in the field of healthcare, hospitals and medicines, RF is used for MRI scan to take images of body organs and in surgical diathermy machines.

- The technology is also very easy to install and involves a very low installation cost as well. One of the advantages of RF technology includes its effective usage in military operations.
- Excessive radiation caused by RF can have harmful effects on pregnant women, pre-adolescent children, heart patients with pacemakers, and also for the environment.
- Besides, RF communication has a huge risk of being hacked. To avoid hacking of the RF network, the transmission is done using many highly-secured algorithms.
The technology is also very easy to install and involves a very low installation cost as well. One of the advantages of RF technology includes its effective usage in military operations. RF is used in radars for detection of enemy movements and also for satellite communication. When the line-of-sight communication between satellites gets interrupted due to the rotation of earth, they communicate with the help of Radio Frequency thereby preventing any blackout of communication.
But along with a host of advantages of RF technology, there are a few disadvantages as well. Excessive radiation caused by RF can have harmful effects on pregnant women, pre-adolescent children, heart patients with pacemakers, and also for the environment. According to research, RF cellular towers face more lightning strikes as compared to areas without such towers.
Besides, RF communication has a huge risk of being hacked. To avoid hacking of the RF network, the transmission is done using many highly-secured algorithms such as Advanced Encryption Standards (AES), Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) and Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA). Further, the RF transmission can also be modulated using frequency-hopping to avoid getting hacked.
With advancements in technology, smart devices based on Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are available now. These smart devices are connected to each other through a RF network. These devices make life easier for people; with advanced technologies, the disadvantages can be further narrowed down.
